A career measured in decades rather than seasons — and a habit of answering questions about decline by becoming a different player.

Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro

A career measured in decades rather than seasons, built on a work ethic that became more famous than any single goal.

The story is told so often it has worn smooth: the island boy, the small club, the flight to Lisbon at twelve, the move to Manchester at eighteen. What the retelling loses is how unusual the middle of it was. Talent that arrives early is common enough. Talent still arriving twenty years later is not.

He has won the Champions League with two clubs and league titles in England, Spain, Italy and Saudi Arabia. He has captained Portugal to a European Championship and a Nations League. Five times he has been named the best footballer on earth.

The interesting part is the reinvention. The winger who became a striker. The player who rebuilt his body when acceleration began to cost more than it returned. Each version was a deliberate answer to a question about decline, and each bought another five years.

He scored at a sixth World Cup, which nobody had ever done, and said it would be his last. At forty-one he is inside two dozen goals of a thousand.
